Five Game Winning Streak Snapped as Women’s Basketball Falls in Heartbreaker to Neumann


HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Jan. 20, 2016)- Senior Ally Fugnitti (Wood-Ridge, N.J. / Wood-Ridge) finished with a game-high 20 points and a career-high nine steals, as Shauntel Williams connected on a jumper with one second remaining that snapped the Centenary College women's basketball team five game winning streak in a 66-64 loss to Neumann University.

JoHanna Metzger finished with 14 points and 16 rebounds for the Knights who improve to 7-9 overall and 5-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Junior Mallory George (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds as the Cyclones fall to 9-7 overall and 5-3 in the CSAC.

The Knights made three triples to take an early 13-5 advantage in the first quarter. Centenary climbed back into the game behind the play of junior Heather Yaros (Hopatcong, N.J. / Hopatcong), who finished the first half with four points and six rebounds. Neumann held a 22-21 lead at intermission.

In the second half, Fugnitti exploded for 20 points and five steals as the Cyclones erased the halftime deficit and took their largest lead of the game at 46-35 with 1:10 remaining in the third. This junction proved to be the turning point as George was sent to the bench with her fourth foul.   

The clock was the Cyclones enemy in the fourth, as Neumann used the charity stripe to chip away at the lead. Centenary didn't go quietly as Fugnitti knocked down a triple to give the Cyclones a 57-48 advantage with 1:48 remaining. The Knights answered every time down the floor, as they made three triples in the final 43 seconds, which evened the game at 64-64 with just nine seconds remaining. Neumann forced Centenary to turn the ball over at half court and then made the 18-foot jumper to seal the victory.
Yaros finished with nine points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Nicole Cartaino (Midland Park, N.J. / Midland Park) finished with seven points and four rebounds.

Head Coach Andrea Kendall and the Cyclones will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 23rd against the Giants of Keystone College at 2:00 p.m.
