Benoit’s Foot Propels Women’s Soccer to First CSAC Win over Gwynedd-Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. (Sept. 26, 2015)- Freshman Amanda Benoit (Hazlet, N.J. / Raritan) netted a goal in the 68th minute to give the Centenary College women's soccer team their first Colonial States Athletic Conference victory, 1-0, over the Griffins of Gwynedd-Mercy University.

Senior Becky D'Angelo (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) and freshman Kara LaPolice (Hopewell, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) both took two shots of the Cyclones, who improve to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in the CSAC. Meghan Petroski took a game-high four shots for the Griffins who fall 4-3-1 overall and 2-1 in the CSAC.

The first half was an extremely even affair as both teams took three shots in the opening stanza. Petroski was the only Griffin to record shots in the first half, as all three of her shots were denied by sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlin Marold (Edison, NJ / Edison). Marold's efforts kept the game scoreless at intermission.

In the second half, the Cyclones would ultimately score the game winner in the 68th minute, as Benoit beat the last defender and ripped a shot across the goal for the 1-0 lead. Centenary attempted to increase their lead to 2-0, but Griffins goalkeeper Jess Tadley stopped shots by Benoit and sophomore Jessica Benoit (Hazlet, N.J. / Raritan).

Marold played all 90 minutes and recorded her second shutout of the season. Senior Jaclyn LaGuardia (Wyckoff, N.J. / Ramapo) and sophomore Emily Pizzuto (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) both recorded a shot.

Head Coach Kevin Davies and the Cyclones will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 3rd, as they will host the Knights of Neumann University at 12:00 p.m.
