HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Sept. 10, 2015) – On Thursday afternoon at J.E Reeves Jr. Field, the Centenary Cyclones (1-3) were dealt a tough, 2-1, loss by the hands of the William Paterson Pioneers.
It was a non-conference game, but the average person wouldn't know it due to the harsh rain throughout the contest, and the way in which these teams preformed. The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead in the 12
th minute on a corner kick by Adrianna Oliveira, which was first headed by Elena Grady straight to the eventual goal-scorer Amanda Carmichel, who headed the ball herself into the open net. The Pioneers continued to put a lot of pressure on the Cyclones, but in the 37
th minute sophomore
Emily Pizzuto (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) lobbed a perfect thru ball to freshman
Amanda Macarro (Old Tappan, N.J. / Northern Valley Old Tappan), who was able to cut inside on the defender and blast the ball past the keeper to tie the game at 1-1.
The second half was a battle of attrition, as both teams struggled in the harsh conditions to put their team in front. The 76
th minute looked to be a turning point for the Cyclones as Sidney Gabrich got a great thru ball and had most of the right side of the field to take a shot, but sophomore
Kaitlin Marold (Edison, N.J./Edison) charged her, and was able to deliver a fantastic sliding save. Almost immediately after the save, the Cyclones brought it back down field in the 80
th minute, and senior
Lorraine Dedrick (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) had a game-winning opportunity as after her initial shot was saved, she got another chance with a wide open net but shanked the shot.
Corner kicks ruled the day for the Pioneers though, as in the 87
th minute, Oliveira sent a corner kick close to into the near post, which deflected off Tori Woetzel for the game-winning goal.
Marold finished with seven saves in the match, while Kat Clint of William Patterson stopped three shots.
Head Coach
Kevin Davies and the Cyclones will look to get back on the winning path when they travel to play at Ramapo College at 1p.m on September 13
