Na'imah Spells (Irvington, N.J. / Irvington) collected 21 digs as the Centenary College volleyball team were swept by the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark, 3-0, on Tuesday evening.
Hayley Merrill recorded nine kills for the Scarlet Raiders who improve to 1-0, while senior
Vanessa McKellar (Annadale, N.J. / North Hunterdon) recorded six kills for the Cyclones who fall to 0-1.
In the first set, junior
Jamie Bierbaum (Hackettstown, N.J. / Hackettstown) served four consecutive points to rally Centenary from a 13-5 deficit, but Rutgers-Newark used two four point runs to take the set, 25-13.
In the second set, the Scarlet Raiders dominated from opening serve to set point, but J. Bierbaum managed to record two kills, while freshman
Krysta Astengo (Clifton, N.J. / Clifton) recorded one.
In the third set, freshman
Giani Montalvo (Elizabeth, N.J. / Elizabeth) served five consecutive points to help the Cyclones rally from a 5-1 deficit and to take their first lead of the match. Centenary would then take its largest lead of the match on a service ace by freshman
Ashley Bierbaum (Hackettstown, N.J. / Hackettstown). Once again, the Scarlet Raiders used two different runs to take the set and the match.
Freshman
Zoey Woody (North Brunswick, N.J. / North Brunswick) added six assists and eight digs, while McKellar also finished with five digs.
