Hackettstown, NJ – The Centenary softball team defeated Baptist Bible College in this afternoon's Colonial States Athletic Conference doubleheader. The pair of wins gives the Cyclones a 16-18 overall record and a 15-5 CSAC record, while the Defenders fall to 3-23 on the season and 2-16 in league play.
Centenary 7, Baptist Bible 5Centenary opened the scoring in the first inning with two runs before the Defenders took one back in the second (2-1). The Cyclones responded with a third run in the bottom of the second as
Alexis Wilson scored after
Ashley Eisenstein reached on a fielding error (3-1).
The Defenders would knot the game at three in the top of the third a double to send two runners across the plate (3-3).
Both squads scored one run in the fifth frame as the game stayed at an even 4-4. After keeping the Defenders scoreless in the sixth, the Cyclones strung together three hits to score three for the 7-4 advantage. Baptist Bible managed to get one run across in the seventh but was not enough as they left two runners stranded taking the 7-5 loss.
Centenary's
Heather Passaro collected a pair of hits driving in two runs, while Eisenstein tallied one hit with two RBI's.
Sammie Darling started the game in the circle pitching four innings giving up four runs off six hits while striking out four. Teammate,
Katie Lauria finished the game throwing three innings allowing just one run with a strikeout.
Centenary 16, Baptist Bible 1In game two, the Cyclones quickly took control of the game amassing an 8-0 lead at the end of two innings of play. Centenary went ahead 3-0 in the first after recording four hits.
In the second inning, the Cyclone bats continued to pour it on after pushing five runs across the plate off four hits. Centenary's
Becca Raymond was responsible for three of the five runs as she powered a three-run homerun to score teammates,
Carolyn Clites and
Heather Passaro.
The Defenders would spoil the shutout in the third inning as they plated one run, but the Cyclones put together another huge inning in the fourth scoring eight runs for a commanding 16-1 lead.
Raymond started the inning with a single to left, while others followed suit to load the bases as Raymond eventually came around to score after
Kylie Morgan-Polefka earned her way on base with a walk. The Cyclone bats continued to be relentless as they batted around and with the bases loaded, Raymond blasted her second homerun of the day for the grand slam.
Raymond had a day at the plate going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a career high seven RBI's. Passaro also notched three hits with two RBI's, while
Carolyn Clites,
Erin Walsh and
Jessica Curtis each collected a pair of hits.
Kylie Morgan-Polefka threw all five innings giving up just one run off six hits, while fanning four batters.
Prior to game, the Centenary athletic department took a moment to honor
Samantha Belmonte,
Jessica Curtis and
Erin Walsh for their dedication to the softball program for the
past four years.
Centenary will wrap up conference play as they visit Cairn University in Langhorne, PA April 25
th @ 1pm.
