Gwynedd Valley, PA – The Centenary baseball team dropped a Colonial States Athletic Conference game to Gwynedd Mercy by a final of 12-10. With the loss, the Cyclones are now 13-10 overall and 5-7 in league play, while the Griffins improve to 5-15 and 5-7 in the CSAC.
Centenary wasted no time getting on the board after
Joe Forcellini singled up the middle and later scoring on
Ryan Caparoni's triple to right center. Caparoni would also score off a sacrifice fly by
Dave Raifsnider to start the game with a 2-0 lead.
The Griffins would make it a new game in the bottom of the first after a two-RBI double by David Blount tied the game at 2-2.
The Cyclones regained the lead (3-1) in the very next inning as Forcellini walked with bases loaded scoring teammate,
Nick Daniele.
After a couple of scoreless innings, Centenary would push ahead to a 4-1 lead courtesy of
Kevin Litus who put the ball in play allowing Caparoni to cross the plate in the fifth. The Griffins kept the game close adding a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth to stay within one run (4-3).
In the sixth inning, Centenary tacked on three runs from three hits and capitalized off of three Griffin errors for the 7-3 advantage. After giving up two unearned runs to the Cyclones, the Griffins battled back in the bottom of the sixth pushing seven runs across the plate to regain the upper hand (10-7).
Centenary chipped away each inning scoring one in the seventh and another in eighth to get within one (10-9) while keeping the Griffins scoreless. The first run came from Chris Ohweiler who stepped in as a pinch hitter for
Nick Ortiz and doubled down the left field line to score
Nick Koffel, while
Kevin Litus tallied an RBI groundout in the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Griffins would make the Cyclone's comeback a bit more difficult after two Griffins came around to score when Jason Mulvey tripled to right center 12-9.
Down to their last at bats with two outs, a single and two walks loaded the bases for Caparoni who reached on a fielder's choice while
Ryan Kanner scored (12-10).
With the bases still loaded,
Dave Raifsnider flied out to right to close out the inning as the Griffins hung on for the victory.
Caparoni led the way with three hits scoring three times as well as driving in two runs, Forcellini and Koffel each collected a pair of hits.
Centenary pitcher,
Nick Cavanaugh started the game giving up four runs off six hits and struck out three batters, while
Ryan St. John suffered the loss for the Cyclones.
Gwynedd's Nick DeRitis took home the win as Andrew Hill closed out the game for the save.
Centenary looks to bounce back as they visit Immaculata University for a single April 17
th @ 3pm.
