Cyclones on Losing End of Shootout

Hackettstown, NJ – The Centenary (1-4, 1-3 CSAC) women's lacrosse team were dealt a tough (18-16) loss by Gwynedd Mercy (4-5, 1-3 CSAC) in this afternoon's Colonial States Athletic Conference game.

The Griffins exploded out of the gate with them getting off to an early 5-0 lead only 7:30 into the first half. However, the Cyclones who played a man down the entire game, responded with five goals to knot the score at 5-5 at the 12:41 mark.  Sophomore middie, Abby Voelkner led the charge netting three of the five, while Devin Sutko and Carlie Schmitt scored the other two.  The Griffins would score three more goals with Centenary's Sutko scoring one as Gwynedd took the first half leading 8-6.

After the break, both teams entered a shootout with each squad registering 10 goals apiece.

Trailing 9-6, Centenary pulled within one after Sutko and Erica Tripp scored early in the second half.  The Griffins would maintain a one goal advantage as both teams would trade goals, but would pull away amassing a 16-10 advantage with 15 minutes remaining.

With the score 17-11, and only 6:12 remaining, The Cyclones continued to battle as Kristen Rabenstein's goal seemed to give the Cyclones a much needed spark.  They went on to score four consecutive goals after Voelkner and Schmitt each netted a pair of goals to pull within two (17-15) at the 3:44 mark.

With 1:33 left in regulation, Sutko fired a shot that would have pulled the Cyclones to within one, rang off the post and on the ensuing possession; Gwynedd's Lauren Mitros added the extra insurance.

Voelkner led all scorers with six goals and two assists for a total of eight points, while Schmitt added four goals.  Sutko finished the day with three goals and one assist, while Tripp added a pair of goals and Rabenstein with one.

For the Griffins, Kelsey Yori netted five goals, while Brianna Greer and Arianna Hensinger each scored three apiece.

The Cyclones will remain home as they play host to Marywood University April 2nd beginning at 4pm.
