Hackettstown, NJ – The Centenary College men's basketball team dropped a Colonial States Athletic Conference game to Cairn University this evening by a final score of 58-55. With the loss, Centenary falls to 9-10 overall and an even 6-6 in league play, while Cairn improves to 2-17 and 2-11 in the CSAC.
A back and forth first half, both squads posted three ties and nine lead changes. Neither team held more than a four point advantage until the final minute where the Highlanders went into the break with the momentum after an 8-1 run for a 33-25 lead.
Centenary's
Rashaan Spencer opened the second half with back-to-back three pointers to cut the deficit to two (33-31). The Cyclones would eventually tie the game at 35-35 at 15:50 and take the lead a minute later after a jumper by
Andy Charles (39-38).
Up 43-40 with 11:45 on the clock, both teams would trade baskets over the next eight minutes posting four lead changes and four ties.
In the eighth and final tie (53-53) with 3:18 left to go in regulation, Cairn's Rueben Lacy drained his second three pointer of the night for a 56-53 advantage. Centenary's
Josh Case knocked down a jumper to get the Cyclones within one (55-56) at the 1:46 mark, but Aaron Stovall sank two of his 16 points on a jumper to push the lead back up to three (58-55) with :46 seconds left.
Centenary had four chances to tie the game, but were unable to connect in the final seconds as Cairn held on for the win.
Spencer netted a team-high 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while
Myles McLeod added 12 points and six rebounds. Cairn's Lacy led all scorers with 20 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double and Stovall chipped in 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor.
