Women’s Basketball Closes 2015 with Non-Conference Loss to Kean

UNION, N.J. (Dec. 30, 2015)- Junior Mallory George (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) collected her eighth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Centenary College women's basketball team closed 2015 with a 82-59  loss to Kean University.

Marajiah Bacon led all scorers with 33 points for the Cougars who improve to 8-2 overall. Sophomore Nicole Cartaino (Midland Park, N.J. / Midland Park) finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Cyclones who fall to 4-6 overall.

Kean took an early 10-2 lead behind the play of Bacon and Jaquetta Owens, as both combined for 39 of the 42 points in the first half.  The Cyclones turned to George and Cartaino on the low block. Cartaino made back-to-back layups, cutting the Cougars lead to 10-6 with 5:01 remaining in the first quarter.

George totaled 11 points and seven rebounds in the first half, as she kept the Cyclones within striking distance by assisting on a layup by junior Heather Yaros (Hopatcong, N.J. / Hopatcong) and connecting on a jumper to cut the deficit to 22-18 with 7:28 remaining in the second quarter. The difference in the first half was the outside shooting as Kean shot 42.1% from downtown. The Cougars closed the half on a 20-5 run to take a 42-23 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Kean continued where they left off in the first half by ballooning their lead to as large as 24 and coasting to their eight victory of the season.

Sophomore Rachel Edwards (Phillipsburg, N.J. / Phillipsburg) finished with seven points and seven rebounds, while Owens finished with 20 points and five assists for Kean.

Head Coach Andrea Kendall and the Cyclones will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 5th, as they will host the Highlanders of Cairn University at 6:00 p.m.
