Three Score in Double Figures as Women’s Basketball Falls in Conference Home Opener

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Dec. 2, 2015)- Junior Mallory George (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) posted her fifth double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds as the Centenary College women's basketball team dropped its Colonial States Athletic Conference home opener to the Cavaliers of Cabrini College, 65-57.

Dana Paterson made four three pointers and finished with 20 points as the Cavaliers improved to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in the CSAC. Senior Ally Fugnitti (Wood-Ridge, N.J. / Wood-Ridge) finished with 14 points for the Cyclones who fall to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the CSAC.

After falling behind 12-5 in the first quarter, Centenary used an 8-0 run to close the quarter with a 15-12 lead. The bench sparked the Cyclones in the second quarter as a combined 10 points from juniors Heather Yaros (Hopatcong, N.J. / Hopatcong) and Kelsey Barofski (White Township, N.J. / Belvidere) gave Centenary its largest lead of the game at 29-19. Cabrini responded with a 10-2 run giving the Cyclones only a two point advantage at halftime.

In the second half, the Cavaliers continued where they left off in the first half as they used a 12-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at 43-33 with 4:51 remaining in the third. Centenary answered Cabrini one more time as they used a 17-7 run to dwindle the deficit down to just two at 52-50 with 9:17 remaining in the fourth.

Despite the Cyclones run, the three ball proved to be the difference down the stretch as the Cavaliers connected on three triples in the final seven minutes to record their first victory of the season.

Sophomore Nicole Cartaino (Midland Park, N.J. / Midland Park) finished with 10 points, six rebounds and two steals, while senior Angela Randle (East Orange, N.J. / Marist), sophomore Rachel Edwards ( Phillipsburg, NJ / Phillipsburg) and junior Melissa Rabe (Byram, N.J. / Lenape Valley) combined for eight of the Cyclones 12 steals.

Head Coach Andrea Kendall and the Cyclones will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 5th, as they will travel to Gwynedd-Valley, Pa. to face the Griffins of Gwynedd-Mercy University at 2:00 p.m.
