Hackettstown, NJ – The Centenary men's basketball team defeated CSAC foe, Gwynedd Mercy 75-67 at the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center. With the win, Centenary improves to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in league play, while Gwynedd Mercy falls to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the CSAC.
The Griffins jumped out to an early 5-0 lead to start the game before the Cyclones put up a 5-0 run of themselves to tie the game at five all as
Rashaan Spencer sank his first of five three pointers on the night at the 17:19 mark. There would be four ties and nine lead changes as neither team held more than a five point advantage throughout the first half.
Centenary would head into the break down 28-31.
The Cyclones would regain the lead with 16:43 after a steal by
Andy Charles led to an "And-1" on a fast break to put Centenary on top (36-35). Centenary held the Griffins scoreless as the Cyclones went on an 11-0 run to get ahead by eight points (43-35).
Midway through the second half and the Cyclones nursing a slim lead (45-38), the Griffins put together an 8-1 run to tie the game at 46 at the 13:11 mark. Gwynedd would eventually take the lead (53-49) before relinquishing it back to the Cyclones who scored eight straight points with three balls from Spencer and
Zachary Duymich and a jumper from Myles Mcleod (57-53).
With five minutes to go, the Griffins would tie the game in the second half for the seventh time (59-59), but Spencer nailed back to back three pointers gave the Cyclones their largest lead of the night (71-62). Centenary's Djovan Beasejour would seal the game going 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final minutes of regulation.
Centenary's Spencer led all scorers and notched a career high 19 points and three pointers made (5). Spencer went 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and 6-10 from the field while taking away two steals.
Despite leaving the game early,
Andy Charles added 14 points and five boards, while Freshman,
Myles McLeod chipped in 13 points on 5-9 shooting from the field. Beausejour also chipped in 11 points and four assists, while
Zachary Duymich totaled nine points, seven assists and two steals.
Gwynedd's, Darnell Artis had the team-high with 12 points and five assists, while Tre Moore added 11 points and a perfect 3-for-3 from three. Brian Hennessey and Justin Knight each chipped in 10 points for the Griffins as well.
For the second time this season, the Cyclones drained 10 three-pointers shooting over 50% (10-18) and 48% from the field (25-52).
Centenary's next contest will be when they host Marywood University at the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center on Saturday @ 2:00 PM
