Hackettstown, NJ – It was a tough loss for Centenary College (2-11, 1-3 CSAC) against CSAC rival Gwynedd Mercy University (8-6, 4-1 CSAC) on Monday night at the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center.
The Cyclones got the lead at the start of the game and never relinquished it until Gwynedd tied the game with 50 seconds remaining in the first half at 34-34.
Ally Fugnitti led the Cyclones with 14 points in the contest while going 4-of-9 from the arch. Fugnitti also dished out four assists and tallied four steals.
Mallory George also had a nice game for the Cyclones as she almost had another double-double but fell one rebound short as she finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Nicole Cartaino also finished the night with 10 points and six rebounds while,
Rachel Edwards added eight points and
Kimberly Osieja with six points in the loss.
Gwynedd's Olivia Bradford led all scorers with a game-high 24 points going 9-14 from the field while adding nine boards. Teammate Natasha Matthews recorded a double-double as she nailed 12 points while grabbing 11 rebounds in the victory.
Things fell apart for the Cyclones in the second half after trading a few baskets, Gwynedd slowly began to pull away with the team going on a 7-2 run over the course of three minutes.
Small runs like those continued throughout the half until the Cyclones found themselves down 11 with 3:04 remaining and were unable to close the gap, which thereafter concluded the 71-55 defeat.
Second chance points proved to be one of the differences in the game as Gwynedd almost tripled Centenary in that department going 21-6. The Griffins outrebounded the Cyclones 48-31 and 18-5 on the offensive glass. Centenary also shot slightly below Gwynedd going 38.9% compared to 41% from the field.
The Cyclones will look to break the losing streak as they host Rosemont College Wednesday January 14
th @ 6:00pm.
