Centenary Falls to Old Westbury in Non-Conference Play

Old Westbury, NY – The Centenary College (2-7) women's basketball team fell to Old Westbury College (6-4) in today's non-conference road game, 67-74.

In the first half, both teams traded baskets in what shaped up to be a tight contest as the largest lead was a mere six points (14-20) after a 7-0 Cyclone run with 10:28 to go.  The Panthers would respond with an 11-0 run to regain the lead (25-20) with 6:22 left.

Sophomore forward, Mallory George netted back to back layups and a couple of free throws by Kelsey Barofski brought the Cyclones back to tie the game for the sixth time (27-27).  The Cyclones would eventually head to the locker room down three (33-30) after Junior Guard, Ally Fugnitti sank her third three-pointer of the half with seven seconds left.

In the final 20 minutes of play, both teams would trade baskets once again before Freshman Rachel Edwards hit a jumper from the top of the key to give the Cyclones a four-point lead (40-44) with 14:36 to go.  The panthers, however, would fight back with defensive pressure forcing 14 second half turnovers.  Old Westbury would capitalize on those errors scoring 19 points off of turnovers and amassing their largest lead of the day (62-51).  The Cyclones battled back to within four points with 2:52 to go in the game, but the Panthers would hold on to their lead going 6-for-6 from the stripe in the final minute of play.

George led the Cyclones with a team high 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Fugnitti tallied 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 from beyond arc.  Fugnitti also dished out six assists and two steals for the Cyclones.  Barofski added nine points and nine rebounds as well as Edwards who also totaled nine points on the day.

Next up for the Cyclones is the Comfort Inn Holiday Classic hosted by Emory & Henry College in Emory, Va. December 29th – 30th
