Cyclones Advance to the CSAC Finals

Hackettstown, NJ - The second-seeded Centenary College women's soccer team defeated Gwynedd Mercy University 4-0 this afternoon in the semifinal round of the Colonial States Athletics Conference playoffs. The Cyclones clinched in a berth in the finals which will take place on Saturday November 8th.

After the Cyclones narrowly missed on a few early opportunities, Centenary's Laura Potter (Gilboa, NY / Gilboa – Conesville) netted a goal off the free kick by Emily Pizzuto (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) to take a 1-0 lead with 29:30 remaining in the first half.

Centenary outshot the Griffins 7-0 and held a 4-0 corner kick advantage as they took their 1-0 lead into the break.

Midway through the second half, Freshman Jessica Benoit (Hazlet, NJ / Raritan) put the Cyclones up 2-0 when she chipped in a shot from a Griffin defender attempting to clear
Becky Camp's (Belford, NJ / Middletown North) cross.

Just five minutes later, Potter would fire a shot from 20 yards out and into the upper right corner from a lead pass by Lorraine Dedrick (Trumbull, Conn / Trumbull) to increase the Cyclone lead to 3-0 and notch her second goal of the day.

Benoit would cap off the scoring for the Cyclones as she too would send her second goal of the day into the net on another chip shot just past the diving goalie.

Centenary's defensive line held the Griffins to only four shots, while Centenary controlled the offense with 21 total shots.

Senior keeper, Megan Williams (Glenside, PA / Abington) made two saves, while Griffin goalie Jess Tadley tallied five.

The Cyclones will now face the winner of #1 Cabrini College / #4 Marywood University in the CSAC Finals on Saturday November 8th.  The winner of the championship game receives the conference's automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament.
