Hackettstown, NJ - After going over 48 scoreless minutes, the Centenary College men's soccer team scored an early second half goal and a late PK conversion in double overtime to surpass Moravian College for a 2-1 overtime victory this afternoon. The Cyclones rise to 10-5-1, while Moravian drops to 5-9-3.
Centenary had numerous opportunities in the first half but could not find the final touch as they out-shot Moravian 8-3. Greyhound's goalie, Jimmy Amorebella made three first half stops to keep the Cyclones off the board.
Within five minutes of the second half, Centenary's
Luis Marin (Union City, NJ / Union Hill) was able to break away from a defender and fire a shot into the corner to break the scoreless tie and put the Cyclones on the board with a 1-0 lead. Â
The Greyhounds kept their composure and stepped up the offensive pressure to hold a slim 6-5 advantage in shots and a commanding 5-1 in corner kicks.Â
In the 66
th minute, Moravian's Austin Van-Spanje tied the game at 1 apiece with a header off a free kick from Matt Guidon.Â
Moravian had several near opportunities to take the lead as they registered five corner kicks in a span of less than three minutes. The Centenary defense would come up big to keep Moravian out of the net and push the game into overtime.Â
Centenary's keeper,
Jesse Goleman (Pittsburgh, PA / Taylor Allderdice) made six stops for the Cyclones, five of which came in the second half.
In the first overtime, senior
Quinn Khouri (Eldersburg, MD / Liberty), received a perfect pass from Marin to put the game away with a chip shot, but a diving save by Bryan Yaksowksi pushed the game into a second overtime.
In the 103
rd minute of the second OT period, a costly Moravian foul in the box granted Centenary a PK opportunity. It was no surprise and only fitting that
Khouri would step up to convert his fifth penalty kick of the season (career 9
th) and seal the win at his final regular season home match of his career. Â
Prior to the game, Centenary honored their four seniors,
Dylan Bricker (Florida, NY / S.S. Seward),
