Hackettstown, N.J. — The Centenary University men's soccer team made their 2025 home opener one to remember, storming back from an early deficit in the second half to defeat Purchase College, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers struck first in the 55th minute, slipping a shot past Cyclones goalkeeper Kevin Velasquez Mejia. But the Cyclones didn't fold, instead, they rallied behind a pair of career-first goals to ignite the home crowd and secure their first win of the young season.
Freshman Colin Hayes delivered the equalizer in the 64th minute, firing home his first collegiate goal to tie the match and swing momentum in Centenary's favor. Then, with just minutes remaining, sophomore Christian Trujillo rose above the defense in the 88th minute and buried a header off a pinpoint cross from Brandon Morales, giving Centenary the dramatic 2-1 lead.
Velasquez Mejia once again proved to be a rock in net, tallying eight saves on the day and holding strong after the early second-half goal.
The win not only gives Centenary its first victory of the season but also serves as a statement about the team's depth and determination. With contributions coming from both freshmen and returning players, the Cyclones look poised to build momentum as the season progresses.
Centenary (1-1) will look to keep the energy rolling when they return to action on Tuesday, September 9th, hosting the NJAC's William Patterson at 4 p.m.
