Cyclones Fall Short In Hard Fought Battle

Newark, N.J: The Centenary University Men's Soccer team put together a gritty effort on the road Wednesday night but came up just short in a 2-1 loss to Rutgers-Newark in Newark.

The Cyclones (2–6) stunned the home crowd immediately after halftime, capitalizing just 22 seconds into the second period. Sophomore midfielder Yalin Salinas slipped a precise ball through the Scarlet Raiders and Freshman forward Ander Dugarte Castillo struck from midfield to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead. The strike was Dugarte's second of the season and marked one of the fastest goals out of halftime for the Cyclones in recent memory.

From there, Centenary defended bravely against relentless Rutgers-Newark pressure. The Scarlet Raiders (6–2–1) generated 23 total shots, but goalkeeper tandem Kevin Velasquez Mejia and Christian Ruiz kept the Cyclones in front for over 30 minutes with a combined seven saves. Mejia anchored the first half with key stops, while Ruiz entered in the second and turned away several dangerous attempts, including a diving save in the 70th minute.

Despite the loss, the Cyclones showed resilience, turning limited attacking opportunities into a memorable goal and making the nationally respected Scarlet Raiders work until the final minutes.

Centenary will look to build on this performance and regroup as they travel to FDU Florham on Friday.
