EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – Seniors
Jon Fleck and
Chris Miller each had an RBI, but it was not enough as the Centenary University baseball team fell at Wilkes University on Wednesday afternoon.
Wilkes jumped out to an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first.
Brandon Reno had an RBI single that scored
Michael Patrizio, who had reached via a walk.
The Colonels added to their lead in the fifth as
Nick Pronti hit a two-out two-run home run down the left field line. Wilkes led 3-0 at that point.
Centenary got one of those runs back in the top of the sixth as singles from sophomores
Paul Links and
Christopher Gass put two runners on with two out. Fleck stroked a double off the fence in right field which scored Links and made it a 2-1 game.
A walk and a double put runners on second and third to start the seventh inning for the Cyclones. Miller lifted a fly ball to center field that resulted in a sac fly as sophomore
Michael Vallario scored on the play.
Centenary loaded the bases with one out in the inning, but a pair of strikeouts allowed Wilkes to keep the lead, 3-2.
The Cyclones had two runners on in the eighth and one in the ninth but were unable to get any of them home as Wilkes claimed the 3-2 victory.
Tony Molitoris earned the win on the mound for Wilkes as he went 5.2 innings and surrendered one run on seven hits.
Andrew Indzonka picked up the save with a scoreless ninth inning for the Colonels. Sophomore
Matt Oehrlein took the loss for the Cyclones after giving up one run on one hit in the first inning. Junior
Tom Bordi pitched three strong innings of relief ball as he allowed just one runner to reach via a walk.
Links was 3-for-4 with a run scored out of the leadoff spot for the Cyclones. Gass had a pair of hits while Fleck recorded the extra base hit and an RBI.
Pronti had a hit, two RBIs and a run scored for Wilkes.
Centenary is back in action on Saturday, March 14 as it returns home to host New Paltz in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
