HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Sophomore
Amanda Lebelt scored the game-tying goal in the 66th minute but William Paterson got a late goal to defeat the Centenary University women's soccer team 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
After a first half that saw both teams spend a significant amount of time in the midfield, William Paterson broke through 54 seconds before the half.
Samantha Persaud scored off a pass from
Corrine Bowe to give the visitors a lead at the half.
William Paterson held a 14-1 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes, but the Cyclones got seven saves from freshman
Chelsea Estacio.
The Cyclones and Pioneers continued to battle before Centenary broke through for the equalizer in the 66th minute. Lebelt corralled a nice ball that was play in and across the box. Her initial shot was blocked but she was able to control the rebound and poke it into the right-hand corner of the net.
The game remained tied until the 71st minute as William Paterson got a ball into the box and
Taylor Mastropasqua slipped it past Estacio.
That proved to be the difference as William Paterson claimed the 2-1 win.
Erica Hickey made one save to earn the win in goal for the Pioneers. Estacio finished with 13 big saves for the Cyclones in the loss.
The Cyclones are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 7 when they host Neumann at 1 p.m.
