BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Freshman Owen Roberts III tallied a team-high 17 points to lead the Centenary University men's basketball team in a 125-84 exhibition loss to Division I Long Island University on Saturday afternoon.
LIU jumped out to an 11-2 lead on a three-pointer from Tyrn Flowers at 17:47.
The Cyclones battled back and cut the lead to four, 12-8 on a three-pointer from sophomore Billy Veras at 18:23.
The two teams continued to battle as Roberts III cut the lead to two, 24-22 with 10:31 to go until the half on a three-pointer.
LIU closed the first half on a strong run and took a 60-33 lead at the half.
LIU opened the second half on a 10-0 run and took a 70-33 lead with 17:53 to play.
The Sharks eventually settled for the 125-84 win.
Roberts III added six rebounds and two assists to go along with his 17 points. Junior Chris LaBelle contributed 11 points, four rebounds and five assists for the Cyclones while freshman D'Angelo Blackmond came off the bench to contribute nine points and eight rebounds.
Sophomore Samad McMillan had eight points and a team-high nine rebounds for Centenary.
Flowers led LIU with 25 points in the contest.
Centenary is back in action on Monday, Dec. 30 when they host Hunter at 4 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader with the women's team.
