Chris LaBelle and freshman
Owen Roberts III combined for 57 points, but a second half comeback fell short for the Centenary University men's basketball team in a 97-89 loss at Wesley College on Tuesday night.
Wesley jumped out to the early advantage as
Brian Cameron drained a three-pointer at 16:39, which gave the home team an 11-7 lead.
Four straight points from the Cyclones tied the game at 11-11 with 15:50 showing on the clock. LaBelle drained a three-pointer during that stretch.
A 12-0 run gave the Wolverines a 23-11 advantage with 11:08 left in the first half. Cameron had five points for Wesley during that scoring stretch.
Roberts III scored nine of the next 11 points in the game and pulled Centenary to within five, 25-20 with 9:43 to play until the half.
The two teams traded baskets as Wesley pushed its lead back to 10, 34-24 with 7:12 remaining in the period.
A bucket from Roberts III pulled Centenary to within six, 38-32 with 3:27 left.
However, Wesley got a three-pointer from Greg Bloodsworth at 3:02 and took a 41-32 at the half.
Derick Charles made the first two baskets of the second half as Wesley pushed its lead to 45-32 with 19:36 to go in the game.
Centenary scored six of the next eight points and cut the Wesley lead to nine, 47-38 with 17:53 to play. LaBelle tallied four of the six points in that stretch.
The two teams traded baskets as a fast break lay-up from Bloodsworth pushed the Wesley advantage to 58-43 with 15:46 showing on the clock.
A
Russell Keyhea lay-up at 12:27 gave the Wolverines a 70-48 lead in the contest.
Centenary scored 14 of the next 20 points in the contest and made it a 76-62 game with 5:35 showing on the clock. LaBelle had six points during that run.
A three-pointer from Bloodsworth at 3:41 pushed the Wesley lead to 83-66.
A 7-0 run cut the Cyclone deficit to 10, 83-73 with 2:10 remaining in the game. LaBelle had four points while Roberts III drained a three-pointer.
A three-point play from Bloodsworth with 35 seconds to play gave Wesley a 93-81 advantage.
Centenary scored the next eight points and pulled to within six, 95-89 with 13 seconds showing on the clock. LaBelle struck for five of the eight points in that run.
Wesley got a pair of free throws from Bloodsworth to seal the 97-89 win.
Wesley shot 54.8 percent from the field and knocked down 12 three-pointers in the contest. Centenary posted a 42.5 field goal percentage and was 19-for-24 from the foul line. The Cyclones won the rebounding battle, 40-37.
LaBelle led all scorers as he tallied 31 points for the second straight game. It was his third game this season with 30 or more points and the junior guard needs just 17 more points to reach 1,000 for his career.
Roberts III came off the bench to score a season-high 26 points while sophomore
Billy Veras contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.
Cameron finished with 27 points and eight assists for Wesley while Bloodsworth contributed 24 points and five assists.
The Cyclones will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 1 as they begin Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play with a trip to Wilson. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
