Big Second Quarter Lifts Wilkes Over Women's Basketball, 46-35

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Sophomore Victoria Jacobs pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds but it was not enough to help the Centenary University women's basketball team overcome a halftime deficit in a 46-35 loss to Wilkes University on Tuesday night.

The two teams went back and forth early as a three-pointer from Jacobs at 4:38 gave the Cyclones a 7-6 edge. Freshman Carmen Escano connected on a bucket at 3:32 which extended the Centenary advantage to 9-6.

Wilkes scored the final five points of the period and took an 11-9 lead after one. Kendra Smith had a pair of baskets for the visitors during that stretch.

The Colonels opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run and took a 21-11 lead with 6:02 to go in the period. Maddie Kelley scored eight of the ten points in that stretch.

Escano briefly halted the Wilkes run with a bucket at 5:51.

Wilkes closed the quarter on an 11-2 run and took a 32-15 lead at the half. Macy Berryman scored five points in that stretch for the Colonels.

Berryman hit one-of-two from the foul line at 7:49 of the third period. That gave Wilkes its largest lead of the game, 33-15.

Sophomore Jessica McKenzie hit a lay-up at 7:38 which jump started a 11-2 run that carried the home team through the end of the third quarter. McKenzie had four points in that run that allowed the Cyclones to cut an 18-point deficit in half. Wilkes led 35-26 with 10 minutes to play.

Centenary scored seven of the first 10 points in the fourth quarter and cut the Wilkes lead to five, 38-33 with 7:23 to play. Sophomore Taylor Bossert drained a three-pointer in that stretch. That was as close as the Cyclones would get the rest of the way.

Wilkes closed the game on an 8-2 run and secured the 46-35 win.

Wilkes shot 27.3 percent from the field in the game. The Colonels shot 60 percent in the big second quarter but just 10 percent in the second half. Wilkes made 18-of-26 chances from the foul line. Centenary posted a 29.6 field goal percentage in the game. The Cyclones were 0-for-2 from the foul line. Centenary held a 38-37 edge in the rebounding battle.

In addition to her 10 rebounds, Jacobs added nine points and two assists for the Cyclones. Bossert contributed nine points, five rebounds and four assists while McKenzie had four points and five blocks while battling foul trouble.

Berryman and Kelley finished with 10 points each to lead Wilkes.

The Cyclones are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 19 when they host Drew at 6 p.m.
