Cyclones Fall in Pair of Contests to John Jay

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Senior Tim Maxwell had five hits and four runs scored to lead the Centenary University baseball team in a doubleheader against John Jay College on Saturday afternoon.

John Jay took the first game by an 11-5 score and completed the sweep with a 13-8 win in the nightcap.

Game One Recap (John Jay Wins 11-5)
The Bloodhounds struck first in game one as Brian Garcia had an RBI single in the top of the first.

Centenary responded with three runs in the bottom half of that frame. Senior Kevin Sensale had an RBI double and later came around to score as senior Michael Caprari attempted a sacrifice bunt and everyone was safe on the play following a John Jay error. The third run in the inning came as senior Mike Dolan reached on an error.

John Jay scored three runs in the top of the second and took a 4-3 lead in the game.

A Jurrel Diaz triple in the third plated another run and extended the Bloodhounds lead to 5-3.

Ryan Osborne had a two-run single in the fifth that pushed the John Jay lead to 10-3.

Centenary got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth as junior Chase Koffel reached on a fielder's choice that allowed fellow junior Ryan Jasiecki to cross the plate.

John Jay pushed its lead to 11-4 with a run in the top of the seventh. The Cyclones responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh as Dolan doubled home Maxwell. That made the final score in game one 11-5.

Joe Gregory earned the win on the mound for John Jay. He went five innings and surrendered four runs on seven hits. Senior James Graziani took the loss for the Cyclones after giving up five runs on six hits in 2.2 innings of work.

Osborne finished with two hits and four RBIs for John Jay while Garcia had a hit and two runs scored.

Maxwell paced Centenary with three hits and a run scored while Sensale had a hit, a run scored and an RBI.

Game Two Recap (John Jay Wins 13-8)
John Jay scored three runs in the first inning and two more in the second and took an early 5-0 lead on the Cyclones. The early offensive action was highlighted by a home run from Diaz and an RBI triple from Garcia.

Centenary got two of those runs back in the bottom of the second. Senior CJ Lyons had a sacrifice fly and Sensale drew a bases loaded walk.

John Jay pushed its lead to 6-2 with a home run in the third inning.

The Cyclones scored three runs in bottom of the third to pull to within one, 6-5. Caprari had an RBI double, Koffel contributed an RBI single and Lyons hit his second sacrifice fly of the game.

Maxwell drilled his third home run of the season in the fourth inning, which gave Centenary a 7-6 edge in the contest.

John Jay responded with seven runs in the fifth inning and took a 13-7 lead. Danny Wynne had a two run double and Garcia added a two-run triple in the frame.

Sensale reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Lyons to score in the fifth and that made the final score 13-8.

Diaz earned the win on the mound with 1.2 innings of relief work. Casey Brown earned the start for the Cyclones and gave up six runs in three innings of work.

Garcia was 3-for-5 for John Jay with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Maxwell went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs for Centenary.

The Cyclones will be back in action when they host Fairleigh Dickinson Florham on Wednesday, April 4 at 3:30 p.m.
