Young Paces Cyclones in Regular Season Finale at Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Freshman Michael Young had a season-high 17 points to lead the Centenary University men's basketball in a 72-58 loss to Gwynedd Mercy in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.

Gwynedd Mercy jumped out to an 8-2 lead as Rich Dunham connected on a pair of free throws at 16:56. The Cyclones responded with a 7-0 run and took a 9-8 lead with 15:15 left on the clock. Young drained a triple during that stretch.

The two teams traded buckets and found themselves tied at 11-11 with 13:36 left in the period. The Griffins used a 12-3 run to take a 23-14 lead with 9:40 showing on the clock. Matt Lopez had five points for Gwynedd Mercy during that key scoring stretch.

Five straight points from sophomore Greg Robinson pulled the Cyclones to within four, 23-19 at 8:17. The two teams traded baskets as Courtney Cubbage's lay-up at 3:12 gave the home team a 31-24 advantage.

A jumper from Robinson at the buzzer sent Centenary into the locker room down by just five, 33-28.

Gwynedd Mercy opened the second half on a 7-0 run and took a 40-28 lead with 17:23 to go in the game. The two teams traded baskets on each end of the floor as senior Hamp Smith's lay-up at 13:26 pulled the Cyclones to within 10, 46-36.

A triple from Smith and a jumper from junior Stewart Lester cut the Cyclones deficit to seven, 53-46 with nine minutes left in the period.

The two teams continued to battle down the stretch as Gwynedd Mercy claimed the 72-58 victory.

Gwynedd Mercy shot 51.7 percent and connected on five three-pointers in the game. Centenary posted a 32.8 field goal percentage and sunk seven shots from behind the arc. The Griffins and Cyclones each grabbed 40 rebounds in the game.

Young finished with 17 points and eight rebounds to lead Centenary. Freshman Chris LaBelle added 14 points and three assists. Freshman Larry Joseph led the Cyclones on the boards with 13.

In his final appearance as a Cyclone, Smith contributed five points, six assists and two steals.

Dunham led Gwynedd Mercy with 17 points and six assists.

Head coach Damian Pitts loses Smith to graduation but will return several of his key contributors, including LaBelle, Young and Joseph next season.
