Luke Tremont (Vernon, N.J. / Vernon Township) totaled three points on three goals as #3 Centenary University men's lacrosse team fell to #2 Marywood University in the semifinals of the Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Rob Maini finished with six points on three goals and three assists for the Pacers who improve to 9-9 overall and will advance to next Saturday's CSAC Championship against the 16 time defending champion Cavaliers of Cabrini University. Senior
Michael Balsamo (Jackson, N.J. / Jackson Memorial) and junior
Nolan Gottshall (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River East) totaled two points on one goal and one assist for the Cyclones who wrap up the season at 7-7 overall.
Tremont opened the scoring on the afternoon for Centenary with a goal off an assist from freshman
Robert Amanto (Avon Grove, Pa / Avon Grove) to even the game at 1-1 with 8:29 remaining. Maini scored two of his three goals in the first quarter as the Pacers netted three unanswered for a 4-1 advantage with less than five minutes to play in the opening quarter.
Balsamo and Gottshall connected for a late goal in the first quarter but still trailed 4-2 after the first 15 minutes. Tremont notched his second goal of the afternoon, scoring off an assist from junior
Michael Muff (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford), in the second quarter to keep the Clones within striking distance at 5-3 with 9:12 remaining in the opening half. Marywood responded with another three unanswered goals for an 8-3 lead at intermission.
In the second half, Centenary couldn't recover from the first half deficit as the Pacers outscored the Cyclones 7-2 in the second stanza. Centenary opened the latter 30 with Balsamo returning the favor to Gottshall for a score at the 12:15 mark of the third quarter. Marywood opened the flood gates, pushing their lead to 11-4 before Tremont completed his hat-trick to start the fourth quarter. The Pacers added in four more for good measure after Tremont's goal to post a 10 goal margin at the final whistle.
