Voelkner / Sutko Notch Career-Highs in Shootout

Hackettstown NJ – Sophomore Abby Voelkner and junior Devin Sutko each notched career-highs in this afternoon's Colonial States Athletic Conference finale.  Centenary College (3-8, 2-7 CSAC) defeated Cedar Crest College (1-12, 1-8 CSAC) by a final score of 23-22. 

In a game that featured nine ties and 45 goals, two players accounted for 22 of them.  It was a duel between Centenary's Abby Voelkner and Cedar Crest's Vivianna Samite, as the pair each scored 11 goals in the game.    

Despite 26 goals scored in the opening half, the game was tightly contested throughout and proved to be anybody's game as neither team held more than a three goal advantage.  The Cyclones led 14-11 with 2:35 remaining but the Falcons scored in the final seconds to head into the break trailing by two (14-12).

Voelkner led the Cyclones with seven first half goals, while Samite netted six.

After the break, Centenary scored a couple quick goals to give them their largest lead of the game (18-13) with 22:22 left to play.  The Falcons would battle back going on a 6-1 run over the span of 12 minutes to tie the game at 19-19 with 7:30 remaining. 

The shootout continued with two ties, (20-20) at the 4:29 mark and once again at the 2 minute mark (21-21). 

With the score at an even 21, Centenary's Carlie Schmitt and Devin Sutko netted back-to-back goals for a two score cushion with 1:26 left.  The Falcons managed to score one last goal with 30 seconds left but the Cyclones won their 29th draw control and were able to hold on to the ball to preserve the 23-22 victory.

Voelkner led the offense with a career-high 11 goals, besting last season's high of nine.  She also tallied three assists for a total of 14 points tying her season best, while also notching a season-best 13 draw controls.

Devin Sutko finished with five goals and a career-high eight assists for a season best 13 points. The eight assists in the game helped tie Sutko's best season mark of 27, and with 79 assists in her career; she is currently the All-time leader in program history.

Carlie Schmitt rounded out the Cyclones top scorers as she netted five goals along with one assist, while Kristen Rabenstein added a pair of goals in the victory.

The Cyclones will wrap up their season as they host SUNY-Old Westbury April 22nd @ 4:00pm.
