GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. (Oct. 27, 2015)- Sophomore
Richy Castro (Landing, N.J. / Roxbury) scored the game-tying goal off an assist from senior
Makenson Joseph (Haute-Feuille, Merchant Dessalines / Irvington High School), as the Centenary College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 double overtime heartbreaker to Gwynedd-Mercy this evening.
Danny Saba headed in the game-winner in the 102
nd minute for the Griffins who improve to 6-12-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Castro took a team-high four shots for the Cyclones who fall to 10-7 overall and 5-3 in the CSAC.
If you blinked, then you missed the first goal as the Griffins scored in the first minute on a shot outside the 18 yard box by Neil Brassell.
Centenary would respond in the 30
th minute, as Joseph played a cross to Castro to even the game at 1-1. After the Cyclones goal, the rest of the first half remained quiet as both teams took a 1-1 tie into halftime.
In the second half, Centenary stepped up the defensive intensity by not allowing Gwynedd-Mercy to get off a shot. The Cyclones got multiple opportunities on the offense end, but couldn't put one in as the game remained knotted at 1-1 after 90 minutes of play.
In the extra session, freshman
Josh Weiss (Hackettstown, N.J. / Hackettstown) recorded back-to-back shots in the opening minute. Weiss pulled the first wide and had the second shot stopped by Griffins netminder Matt Chilcote. Centenary kept testing Chilcote with sophomore
Daniel Lamanna (Roxbury, N.J. / Roxbury) pulling a shot wide and Castro having his header denied by Chilocote to send the game into a second overtime.
In the second extra session, the Griffins capitalized early by scoring on a header off a free kick opportunity.
Sophomore
Justin White (Minehill, N.J. / Dover) recorded three shots, while senior
Jesse Goleman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Taylor Allderdice) played all 101:44 minutes and made three saves.
