Men's Soccer Opens CSAC Play with a Win Over Cairn

Hackettstown, NJ – The Centenary men's soccer team defeated Cairn University 7-1 in their first CSAC conference match earlier this afternoon.  The Cyclones look to continue storming through the CSAC this year as they increase the winning streak in league play to 11 wins where their last loss came on October 2, 2013 against Marywood.

The Cyclones controlled the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the highlanders 9-1 and heading into the half with a 2 goal advantage.  Junior midfielder, Nick DePasquale (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) scored his first of two goals on the day on a pass from Luis Marin (Union City, NJ / Union Hill) for a 1-0 lead.

Less than eight minutes later, teammate Justin White (Minehill, NJ / Dover) would put the Cyclones up by two on a breakaway by Quinn Khouri (Eldersburg, Md / Liberty) who set up White with a perfect pass for the score.

The Cyclones found their stride after the break, dominating the 45 minute period with a 13-3 advantage in shots.  Less than a minute into the second half, Luis Marin scored on a breakaway as he beat a defender to send a third goal for Centenary into the net.

To put this game out of reach for the Highlanders, Centenary would create a commanding 5-0 lead after the DePasquale and White duo scored their second pair of goals in a span of six minutes.  DePasquale would pick up the scraps after a shot was deflected and White scored on a diving header after Chris Bonilla's (East Orange, NJ / St. Benedict's Prep) shot hit the cross bar.

Sebastian Castillo (Wharton, NJ / Morris Hills) and Richy Castro (Roxbury, NJ / Roxbury) would cap off the scoring with a pair of goals in the 73rd and 74th minute with one coming from a penalty kick.

Cairn's Justin Nolan managed to save the shutout as he netted a late goal in the 77th minute.

10 Centenary players tallied at least one shot on the day, as the shots were in favor of the Cyclones 22-4.  Centenary goalie Jesse Goleman (Pittsburgh, PA / Taylor Allderdice) made three stops, while Cairn's Caleb Pancoast tallied five and Ivan Jasso grabbed two for the Highlanders.

The Cyclones improve to (6-2-1) overall and (1-0-0) in CSAC play, while Cairn drops to (1-6-1) and (0-1-0).

Next up for the Cyclones is a road match against Cabrini College October 4th at 2:30pm in Radnor, PA.
