Box Score Gwynedd Valley, PA – In the first round of the Colonial States Athletic Conference playoffs, fifth seeded Centenary College (12-6-1) defeated No. 4 Gwynedd Mercy University (7-12) 3-2 in an overtime thriller to advance to the CSAC Semifinals.
In a physical game, it was evident that both teams wanted to leave everything out on the field in this quarterfinal matchup.
Centenary took a 1-0 lead to break open the scoreless contest in the first half when
Abiodun Lawal took advantage of a goalie misplay from a diving save in the box at 14:05.
The Griffins evened the match just two minutes later (16:00) as Danny Saba drilled a shot from Chris Black's free kick. The score would remain at one apiece for the remainder of the half.
After the break, Gwynedd would take the lead in the 64
th minute as Saba would drill his second goal of the day into the back of the net off a cross feed from Rich Mychack to go up 2-1.
However, Centenary did not relent and kept the offensive pressure on. Just one minute later (65
th minute), the Cyclones answered back as
Luis Marin took a
Quinn Khouri pass into the box, then fired it past the keeper to knot the game at two.
With the score tied at 2-2 after a physical 90 minutes, both squads would play on for another ten minutes.
In the 95
th minute,
Magno Franco would seal the game for the Cyclones as he netted a pass from Marin through traffic and into the lower corner just under diving Griffin goalie, Matt Chilcote.
Centenary's
Jesse Goleman made four stops, while Chilcote turned away three for the Griffins.
After suffering a 2-0 loss at home October 22
nd at the hands of the Gwynedd in the regular season, Centenary was able to settle the score and move on to the CSAC semifinals.
